After nearly two years, orbiter Atlantis is set to make her return to the International Space Station (ISS) in November following her extremely successful flagship mission (STS-125) to repair the Hubble Space Telescope in May 2009. However, meetings have been taking place on Wednes...
Atlantis returns to ISS missions – following her flagship mission to service the Hubble Space Telescope for a final time – with the aforementioned STS-129 mission, set to deliver the Express Logistic Carriers 1 and 2 (ELC-1 and ELC-2) to the Station.
MMOD strikes since Flight Day 2’s inspections are the only real threat to the orbiter’s TPS, with the increased risk well known ahead of Atlantis’ flight to Hubble, which is in a higher - more debris potential - orbit than the regular trip to the International Space Station (ISS), which al...
The first of the five EVAs during STS-125’s visit to the Hubble Space Telescope involves the Soft Capture Mechanism installation, Wide Field Camera III installation, SI C&DH Computer R&R, Latch Over Centerline Kit installation, Wide Field Camera III aliveness test and chec...
During what will be an historic day for the space program, Atlantis will mark the final time an orbiter will rendezvous with the Hubble Space Telescope. The orbital ballet between Atlantis and Hubble will see the orbiter approach HST from below, rising up the R-bar, ahead of capturing Hub...

Atlantis has entered the complex ballet of S0007 (Launch Countdown) operations for the flagship STS-125 mission to the Hubble Space Telescope, with no major issues being worked by engineers at Pad 39A. Atlantis - tracking a launch target of 2:01pm local on Monday - and has undergone the c...
Engineers will carry out the repair on Atlantis’ damaged port radiator over the weekend, as STS-125 pushes ever closer to the launch countdown for the mission to Hubble. Meanwhile, the issue relating to the Forward Reaction Control System (FRCS) F5R thruster issue on Discovery has been...

Highlighting the ever-fluctuating nature of the Space Shuttle Program (SSP), STS-129 was originally scheduled to fly with Discovery; however, delays to the Hubble Space Telescope servicing mission forced NASA to realign its downstream flight manifest - resulting in an orbiter swa...
Moreover, given that the Hubble Space Telescope’s orbit is inclined to a different azimuth than that of the International Space Station, Atlantis’ launch trajectory will preclude the use of two normally available Trans-oceanic Abort Landing (TAL) sites - Istres, France and Zaragoz...

The launch of the Soyuz, which works on a fixed timeline due to the limited on-orbit lifetime of the Russian vehicle, equates to a need for Discovery to depart from the International Space Station (ISS) no later than March 25. Should the option of a one EVA mission be taken, the EVA would work...

Atlantis, tasked with carrying out the final servicing mission to Hubble, was rolled back from Pad 39A, following on orbit issues with Hubble. After being de-stacked, she has been patiently waiting in her Orbiter Processing Facility (OPF-1) for the realigned schedule, which will soon...
Atlantis’ trip to service the Hubble Space Telescope remains on track for May, although another key milestone meeting is due in early January to discuss the status of the replacement Hubble hardware - which is still undergoing testing. An alternative launch date in November remains an o...
“The Science Mission Directorate (SMD), along with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Team, announced that a February/March launch date is not feasible due to the issues they are experiencing with the HST spare avionics boxes on the ground.”
“Manifest Options: The Hubble Space Telescope team continues to evaluate their schedule for delivery of requalified spare hardware for launch on STS-125 to recover science operations,” noted Tuesday’s 8th Floor News (HQ memo).
Atlantis/STS-125 Latest: “At the SSP/ISS (Space Shuttle Program/International Space Station) scheduling meeting, it was agreed to by the SSP Manager to aim STS-125 at 2/17 for a ‘work to’ date, rather than simply stating ‘Mid-Feb’,” noted the memo.
With the switchover on Hubble upcoming, the SSP (Space Shuttle Program) is hoping to make a decision within the next few weeks on the actual flight order. Discovery’s STS-119 team will then discuss requirements - should STS-125 move to February - for taking over as the unique STS-401 role.
A problem during the preparation of Atlantis’ Hubble Servicing payload has delayed its arrival at Pad 39A until Saturday. As a result, STS-125’s launch date is in real danger of slipping - with a re-evaluation of the flow timelines on Monday. Atlantis STS-125 Processing Latest:
